The Old School Hall

Old School Hall in the village of Fulmodeston serves as the community centre for Fulmodeston, Barney, Little Barney and Croxton. Formerly the local primary school, and now run as a registered charity, Old School Hall can be Hired For Functions such as Wedding Receptions, Christenings, Birthday Parties and Wakes.

Old School Hall is of Victorian origins and built of brick, with slate roof. There is a prominent commemorative stained glass window, commissioned to mark the millennium. Old School Hall facilities include a bar area, the main hall, a kitchen with new fridge/freezer, new cooker & microwave, and toilets, along with parking for twenty cars.

Old School Hall offers a meeting place and facilities for local community events such as bingo, quiz nights, whist drives, annual shows, charity fundraising events and other social events. It is also used for meetings of Fulmodeston and Barney Parish Council.

Old School Hall has a licensed bar, which is open for social events and is available for hire with the hall. (Please contact the Bookings secretary for further information)

Local village groups including the Friendship Group, Food Production Club, Local History Group, Book Club, Knitting Group, Walking Group and others meet regularly at Old School Hall.

Parish Plots

There are 12 allotments in Barney which are called  ‘Garden Plots’,  7 are currently vacant and available to rent from Astley Farms. Contact the farm office at Grange Farm for details – 01328 822125.

Defibrillators

Community Heartbeat Trust: our defibs are now registered “live” with the Ambulance Service so anybody in the area dialling 999 and asking for an ambulance can be told by the controller the location and access number of the nearest defib if the casualty’s symptoms suggest a defib  could be deployed. The “precautionary” notices on the defib cabinets have now been removed. FAB Defib’s funds are held in a protected account by the Parish Council and are reported on by the Clerk at Parish Council meetings.

The Food Production Club

The Barney, Fulmodeston and Thursford Food Production Club is one of the oldest gardening groups in the area, being formed during the ‘Dig for Victory’ and ‘Make Do and Mend’ days of the Second World War.  At that time the Club included a pig section and showed rabbits, activities since lapsed.

The Club has seen many changes over the years and the focus is now as much on “gardening” as “food production”. The Annual Plant Sale, held in May, is our major fund raiser, when we sell the excess plants cultivated by members and friends, and from this year, have invited a couple of local craft sellers to join us and sell their wares.

Our Annual Summer Horticultural and Craft Show held in July is the opportunity for our members to show their skills in growing vegetables and houseplants, arranging flowers and displaying their craft skills in categories such as baking, knitting, needlework, photography and painting.

Talks and visits to gardens and other associated sites are arranged each year; a Seed Swap and Social is held at the beginning of the Year, a Bring and Share Social is held in the Summer and a Winter Social also takes place at a local venue or restaurant.

And all this for an annual household membership of £10.00 - cash only.

Benefits of membership:

Free entry to Food Production Club talks,

Opportunity to attend visits (non-members pay additional £3.00 cost),

Opportunity to enter all categories in the annual show ( 2 categories are available to non-members).

Receipt of quarterly email newsletter

Volunteers needed.
